If you're a DIY woodworking enthusiast, then you've probably used a tap-and-die set before. If not, you've seen it at work. It comes in handy when you have a job that involves nuts and bolts. A tap can be used to form or cut the nut element, while a die can be used to form or cut the bolt element.

This process of forming or cutting threads with a tap is known as tapping, while the same process with a die is called threading. For this process to be successful, you need to ensure that you have the right tap-and-die kit. However, with so many types in the market, which one is the best to buy?

After carefully analyzing the available tap-and-die tools, we loved the GEARWRENCH 114 Piece Ratcheting Tap and Die Set for its high carbon-steel construction, the Craftsman 75 pc Inch & Metric tap and die Set for its ease in threadings, and the 60-Pc Master Tap and Die Set for its cost-to-value ratio. We also chose these because of their practicality and versatility. Plus, the sets come in 40-114 pieces which are more than enough tools for any home improvement projects you're embarking on.

To help you find the best one for you, we have curated reviews of the five best tap-and-die sets, their pros and cons, and several factors you need to consider before buying a tap-and-die set.

But first...

What Is a Tap-and-Die Set?

A tap-and-die set is used for cutting threads in diverse materials, such as wood, metal, and plastic. Both taps and dies are used to cut clean, new, custom threads. However, there is a stark difference between them.

While taps create screw threads (internally) so that threaded bolts can be screwed in correctly, dies make external threads on a rod. Another way to say this is that taps cut the female threads while dies cut the male threads. The reason why they are used together is to ensure accurate compatibility.

Since taps and dies are used to cut soft and hard materials, ideally, they should be stronger than the material they are cutting. The best tap-and-die set should contain tools such as:

  • Taps
  • Dies
  • T-handle tap wrenches
  • Die stock
  • Screw pitch guide
  • Heavy-duty carry case

Expert Tip: When cutting, use lubricants such as oil to lubricate the threads so as to reduce friction and make chip removal easier.

Factors to Consider Before Buying the Best Tap and Die Set

1. Types of Taps and Dies

The tap is the part that creates the nut portion and are long metal shafts that have a fluted edge. The different types of taps include;

  • Taper Tap- It looks like a screw and is used to determine the size of the thread.
  • Bottoming Tap- It is similar to a taper tap, but you can only use the first six threads. Moreover, it has a more tapering head because it is used to deepen thread.
  • Plug Taps-This is used to polish the thread to get ready for the bolt.

On the other hand, here are some types of dies;

  • Circular Die- It is used for threading in a clockwise direction and a single motion. It is the easiest to use since it doesn't have a lot of adjustments.
  • Two-piece Adjustable Die Wrench-It is used for easy adjustments of custom threads
  • Die Nut- Sharpens and refines an existing thread and is not used to make new threads.

2. Quality

The build quality of the tap-and-die sets is one of the most important factors to consider when buying one. The various components in the set should be strong enough to withstand day-to-day use. For this reason, you need to select sets that are made from highly durable materials. However, the level of quality is dependent on your needs.

3. Size

Different sets may come denominated either according to the Metric, which is based on European sizing, or according to SAE sizing based on U.S. sizes. Ensure that your set is dominated in the right way because if it is not, you won't be able to correctly fit the holes and threads to your bolts and nuts. A set with both the Metric and SAE compatibility is recommended.

4. High-Speed Steel or Carbon Steel

The steel type used can determine the quality and durability of the tool. There are two choices of steel when it comes to the best tap-and-die set in the market today; high-carbon steel and speed steel. While HSS tends to be better in professional workshops and industrial settings, the high-carbon steel sets should not be ignored.

This is because they are a great choice when it comes to doing repairs because they are quite affordable. It means that the carbon steel sets are also more reliable for chasing threads instead of cutting new ones. HSS taps, on the other hand, remain sharper for longer and are easier to use. The choice between the two is determined by the kind of work you're planning to do and the budget.

5. Number of Parts

A tap-and-die set will provide you with more versatility enabling you to do a diverse and wide range of projects. However, it is important to ensure that the quantity is balanced with quality. Some sets may come with so many pieces, but the quality is not the best.

When it comes to tap-and-die sets, it should be quality over quantity. The relation between the number of parts and the price will vary because one set can either be expensive because of more parts or higher quality parts. Always keep an eye on the quality before choosing the parts or set you want.

6. Cases

You want to ensure you go for a case with a sturdy and reliable case at all times. This is to ensure that the tools are well protected so that they can last as long as possible. A case also helps you with the organization and storage of each of the tools. While some cases are made of durable plastic case materials, metal ones tend to be more durable.

How to Use a Tap & Die Set the Right Way

It is important to understand the three types of taps first to know how and when they should be used. While some cannot be used for heavyweight activities (taper taps), others cannot be used to start taping processes (plug taps).

  • Plug tap. It has a continuous cutting edge, so it cannot start the tapping process of an unthreaded hole. It's used to continue the cutting process after the rest have begun.
  • Second tap. The only difference between these taps is their mouths; while the plug tap is continuous, the second tap has 3-5 tapered threads, while the taper taps have 8-10 threads. The second tap is the most commonly used type of tap used.
  • Taper tap. As said above, this has 8-10 tapered threads and is used in lighter applications because it's at the most risk of breaking.

You can drive taps manually, but some are powered electrically. They can be machine-driven, using radial drilling machines or bench-type drill machines.

The process of using taps the right way is as follows:

  1. Preparing the hole. The hole should be smaller than the tap's outer diameter. Then drill the hole and remove all chips from the hole.
  2. Create the threads by turning the tap clockwise and making two complete rotations. Always keep the tap centered and fixed. To remove the tap, turn the ratchet anticlockwise.

The process is conversely similar for dies.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Tap and Die Sets

2. Are tungsten taps and dies any good?

If you get a tungsten set of taps and dies from a good manufacturer, they will make work easier since they offer strong performance. Furthermore, their teeth tend to be very sharp for easier and faster cutting. Therefore, they are considered great options for all normal uses or lighter uses and can last for a good number of years.
